Three years and seven months ago, I met my freshman year roommate via Facebook. May 2008 was a time of newfound hope and transition - one month away from leaving high school, bolting from the confines of my hometown, moving out on my own, going to college, and absorbing the college lifestyle. Looking back, I was over-eager about the promises of excitement and happiness that the college lifestyle would bring. As an aged senior, I've learned to cherish the humble and low-key nature of my hometown. The whole glitzy lifestyle, frat parties, urban sprawl, overpriced commodities, and the "my dad is richer than your dad" scene isn't really my thing.
Nevertheless, I hold a special place in my heart for my first roommate. Even though we are probably two completely different people, I loved her since the first day we moved into Parkside Arts and Humanities Residential College Room 3314-C.
And this is our relationship with each other:
Since Toni is graduating one semester early and flying back to Hong Kong on Monday (12/11/2011), we decided to celebrate with her on Sunday night at The Boiling Crab in Koreatown, the ultimate place to grub.
If you can ignore the extended wait time (we arrived around 5pm and we were seated around 5:40pm), the Boiling Crab is a fabulous place to eat. I ordered a half-pound of shrimp with the "Whole She-Bang" seasoning, a corn on the cob, the sweet potato fries, and the Cajun fries. At the moment, I'm still drooling over the sauce. And a half-pound shrimp isn't a lot - if I go to Boiling Crab again, I could probably eat one pound of shrimp no problem.
Grubbing at The Boiling Crab is messy. There are no utensils involved - just your hands, a few napkins, and the table. Even ketchup for the fries is deposited right onto the table. Not knowing how messy The Boiling Crab was, I walked into the restaurant wearing a brand new white shirt. Luckily, I came out of the restaurant with the shirt still white and intact. But definitely wear clothes that you aren't afraid to get dirty.
Overall, it's a messy experience that definitely deserves a repeat though the long wait time is a turn-off.
I wish my first roommate the best of luck in her post-graduation life. I can't wait to see her at the Commencement Ceremony in May!
